He finds out only after he's moved Francine and the rest of the family to the mountains, where he's enjoying their undivided attention so much he doesn't bother telling them the truth. An encounter with a mountain man puts him on the spot in the episode "An Apocalypse to Remember."

When he receives a letter informing him that his biological dad has recently died and left Dexter everything, it's time for a road trip.
